Stress Makes Everything Worse: Menopause

Stress, we often underestimate just how destructive it can be to our health. We all know stress isn’t good for you, we all know it’s unpleasant. So why then do we brush it off or choose to accept it as a way of life?

‘Try not to stress’ you will hear people tell you. But it’s so much easier said than done… that’s something we can all agree on. Simply telling yourself not to stress won’t do the job. We need to take active steps to relieve stress during both perimenopause and menopause, so where do you start?

Don’t Stay in a Stressful Job

Most jobs have a bit of pressure and at times can become overwhelming. As long as these times are few and far between, it can be quite manageable. The real problem occurs when your job becomes high stress all of the time. If you dread going to your place of work and you come home emotionally exhausted every single day, then it really isn’t worth it. No job like this is worth the money. Why? Because essentially you are choosing money over your health. It’s never too late for a career change or a job change. Even if you’re only a few years away from retirement, don’t stay in a miserable position for money.

Meditate

Clearing the mind through meditation can work wonders. If you’re a sceptic, we say give it a try 15 minutes every day for a week and then draw your own conclusion. There is no trick to meditation, anyone can do it, anywhere. Simply focus only on your breathing, in and out. If things pop into your mind don’t try to fight them, let them come in and leave again… always bringing your attention back to your breath.

Get Some Downtime

There comes a point when you just need to take some time for yourself. No matter how busy your schedule seems, get out the calendar and block out some days for ‘you time’. Use weekends wisely, it’s totally okay to do nothing. If you’re one of those people who feel guilty when you’ve spent a day doing no housework and nothing productive, it’s time for a new approach. Snap out of it! You deserve to live life for you and no one else.

Eat Less Sugar

Cut out the bad food, especially high processed sugar. Refined sugar is released into the body very quickly which impacts our blood sugar levels. These spikes in blood sugar can be responsible for sudden mood swings, feeling high one minute and low the next. Cortisol (the stress hormone) gives us that desire to eat comfort food. This, in turn, can then lead to mood swings and stress… So the cycle can be never-ending. As well as eating more natural foods and less sugar, we also recommend a natural supplement called ‘Ashwagandha’. This is a powerful healing herb that works by reducing levels of cortisol naturally.

Again, we seriously can’t stress just how important it is to put your mental health first. Menopause can cause low moods, anxiety and even depression, so added stress only makes this worse. Give yourself the best chance of enjoying this change in your life and follow our tips.
